Being that I work in the Seattle/Redmond area, I have a number of friends who either work close to, or within Microsoft. Over the past few days, I’ve heard some interesting details on the clandestine ‘Pink’ phone – including from people who work within the mobile division. I’ll be interesting to see which one of [...]

Thermal Imaging
July 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment
So the lastest scientific instrument (aka. cool toy) to arrive at the GeekPi headquarters is a Fluke Ti25 thermal imager. As the cost of equipment continues to drop, and they’re used more energy auditing, expect to start seeing more of these in the future.
What Does It Do?
So what is a thermal imager? Think of it [...]
Solar Flashlight Review
July 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment
In my last post, I described the weakness of LED lighting in the home and for general illumination – this product is what I see as an excellent implementation of the light emitting diode technology; low power consumption and rugged capabilities. Mid last year, the company SunNight Solar (www.sunnightsolar.com) sent me one of their first [...]
High Tech Utility Bill – A Call to Action
May 20th, 2009 · 3 Comments
Most people don’t give a second thought about their electric utility meter, other than just taking a look at it to make sure it’s still spinning. The same goes for their utility bill. It’s just another, likely ever increasing bill to dread each month.

DreamScene Power Consumption
January 5th, 2009 · 3 Comments
If you’re looking out to keep your power consumption low, then stay away from the Dreamscene function built within Vista Ultimate. It looks really cool, and yeah, I love the eye candy, but it may not be worth it.

Controversy Strikes Geekpi over Microsoft Loaner Laptop
December 3rd, 2008 · 3 Comments
It had to happen. The accusations that bloggers and journalists have been bought out by Microsoft, because they (we?) took loaner laptops. I enjoy that the website ‘Boycott Novell’ took the time to detail my coverage of Windows 7 and the PDC coverage.
According to them:
“I got a $2000 worth of schwag from a company that [...]
Win 7: Demo Laptop
October 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Here’s a look at the hardware that Microsoft is using to demonstrate their lastest pre-beta version of Windows 7. Journalist reviewers are loaned 1 of two models of laptop, the hard hitting, but feather weight Dell 1330 and a lenovo laptop with an SSD hard-drive (I don’t recall the model). That’s all I can say [...]

APC Battery Failure
September 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments
A couple months back, the dreaded ‘beep of death’ began to come from the APC uninterpretable power supplies from the GeekPI server rack. I figured it was an end-of-life issue with the several-year-old batteries, and while I was correct, I didn’t anticipate the amount of damage and failure the batteries had gone through.

Dell XT Tablet
December 17th, 2007 · No Comments
A bit of an early Christmas present for me. I just got a fully decked out Dell XT tablet in to setup for a user. We’ve actually been a tablet tester (word doc) for Microsoft for sometime now. I’m very excited to break it out and give it some testing compared to our Toshiba tablets. [...]
