Geek Pie Challenge!

January 16th, 2009 by Steve Allwine · 10 Comments

What if you ate nothing but pie?

That’s what we’re going to do at Geekpi.com, for two weeks straight! Eat those semi-gross, individually packaged fruit pies.

First off, yes we are insane. Secondly, this isn’t just a take-off of the website’s name, this is a semi-scientific study & challenge my wife and I came up with.

Before I go on with the subject of this post, I need to give you a little bit of background. I  frequently discuss with my wife about the best calorie-per-dollar food value. For instance, cheap foods that have a lot of calories. You get more of your caloric intake for the day on less money. Goldfish Crackers would be a good example of a good calorie-per-dollar food because they are really high in calories, but fairly low in price.

Search for 'calorie per dollar' on goggle, and this equation shows up. I'm confused.

With a new rule in our county, all large chain restaurants have to display the nutritional content of their food on all of their menus, including drive-thrus. I always knew fast food was chocked full of calories, but now I can really ‘get the most’ for my dollar with the calorie count next to the price. I know that’s kind of the opposite legislators were hoping for when they drafted this new law.

Just the other day, my wife and I were wondering what would happen if you ate those fruit pies as your entire diet? They were one of the best ‘calorie per dollar’ value at Mcdonalds. You would be eating a less amount of food than a normal meal, but still be getting your 2000-calorie daily intake. What would happen? Would you lose weight because you’re eating less food? Would you gain weight because you’re ingesting more fat? Or would your weight stay the same because you’re still getting your regular 2000-calories. Well, my wife and I are about to find out.

For 2 weeks, Renee and I will survive on nothing but fruit pies. Since the Mcdonalds ones are a little too small for our purposes, we’re going with the ‘hostess style’ ones from the supermarket. Each pie is roughly 480 calories and cost right around $0.70 each. Renee will be eating 4 pies a day to equal 1920 calories: 1 for breakfast, 2 for lunch and 1 for dinner. I will be eating 5 pies a day to equal 2400: 1 for breakfast, 2 for lunch and 2 for dinner. Thus, we will not be changing our usual daily caloric intake.

Our lifestyle will stay the same. We will not workout any more or any less than a usual week. We will live every day the same, not altering any behavior as to not disrupt or sway the results of this test. The only difference will be that our diet will consist of pies, water and vitamin supplement so that we don’t get something funky like scurvy.

We’ll start tomorrow, Saturday morning, and will be updating our progress daily. We’ll see if we can make it to the end of the 31st.

You have no taste. I loved getting those when I was 12. I think you will be sick by Day 3 and give up. Are you going to eat multiple flavors or just one?

We’ll be eating all the flavors we can find.

As a non-medical profesinal, I highly recomend not doing this.

This is, once again, a reason why you and Renee are PERFECT for each other.

My coworker reccomends that you both, at the very least, get a multi-vitamin if you are really going through with this.

Also I can’t wait til you have to decide between apple and french apple. The hillarity will ensue.

Hahaha! The results to this should be really interesting. Sounds fun and yummy too. Good luck, keep us updated. (In a Napolean Dynamite voice – Pass me the pie, GOSH!) Love you

Couldn’t you at least do this with more varied sweet treats? Say Ringdings on day, yodels the next, pie for dessert…

If this works out for you..i might try doing the same thing iwth whoopie pies.
    Good luck and sweet dreams.

Interesting garbage food selection but I, a true garbage food aficionado, know a few ways to get even more caloric bang for your buck. For example, your apple pies with 480 calories at $.70 per pie may be indeed be impressive, my Swanson Beef Pot Pie is similarly priced and just 400 calories BUT has 50% more Dietary Fiber, 91% less Sugars, and, most importantly, 333% MORE Protein. Sure, my Pot Pies may have 131% more sodium and 300% more Cholesterol, but hey, big deal. Mine have the traditional role as cheap belly-stuffers for children.

If you are looking for maximum calorie per dollar value, with no regard for nutrition, did you consider just pure lard? You could buy it in bulk from costco and I bet it would be an even better value. Or maybe just pure sugar would be better, since you’d probably lose a lot of the lard as vomit.
